Francis Song's testimony

Francis Song was born in Bogor Indonesia. He graduated from a Catholic University in Jakarta , awarded with a Master Degree on Social and Politic. He worked as a journalist at “Harian Kompas” newspaper, then moved to become an editor at “Majalah Ekspres” as a political commentator.Early in 1974 , Indonesia passing through a period of political turmoil, forcing to closed the Ekspres Magazine.
He was very disappointed of loosing his good job and the opportunity opened for him to study in Australia. He left his journalistic profession and move on to pursuit a knowledge in medical field.
His journey with the Lord began when he first met Marsha, She converted him to become a born again Christian. He decided to settle in Australia and they both got married in 1977.
He has three beautiful children : Jesseca the oldest, follow by Joseph and the youngest , Magdalena.
His live have been impacted dramatically by what he has seen and experienced since he follow Jesus.
Many ministers prophesized that he will become an evangelist one day.
The story began in the end of May 1989, when God said to him “I am going to send you to China”.
He think “that is impossible! I haven’t got any money”. He just returned from a long holiday with his family touring Indonesia. His bank account was almost zero. But the urge was getting stronger and at the end he just surrendered : “God, do whatever you want me to do and I will obey”.
When he went to work the next day, his secretary gave him a bundle of letters. As he sorting the letters and opening his daily mail, he discovered a very interesting letter : an invitation to attend the international medical conference which just happened to be held in Beijing China.
He was very excited full with joy as the “impossible” are now become “possible”.
His company employer would cover all the expenses for him to attend the conference and did not have to worry about the finance anymore.
Because there weren’t any flight fly directly to Beijing, he has to stop over in Hong Kong.
While he was over there, he catch up with his old friend who asked him what he was doing in Hong Kong. He told his friend that God has told him to go to China but he didn’t know what for.
His friend mentioned that there is an urgent need for a courier to bring bible to China.
His friend came back to his hotel where he was staying with a suitcase full with bible and bought him a backpacker bag for him to put all his clothes in.
He arrived in Beijing Capital International airport with one suitcase full bible and one backpacker bag packed with his clothes.
He began to worry when he has to passed the custom checkpoint. He knew that he would got in trouble when the custom officer found that he try to “smuggle” the full suitcase of bible.
He admitted that the backpacker bag full with clothes belong to him, but the big suitcase belong to the Lord who sent him.
He look up and said it silently : “Lord, I look after my stuff and you take care yours.”
In those days, taking bible to China is forbidden and against the law.
The custom officer did not asked to check and open his luggage’s, instead asked him to put in an conveyor x-ray machine which obviously they can see inside the suitcase full with book.
In panic, suddenly he began to pray with a very loud voice. He was praying in tongue as the Lord gave him.
His noisy sound and verbal expression seems to manage to distracted the on duty officers, which were wondering what language he spoke. Is that Korean, Vietnamese, Philippines’ ????, and no one seems to understood. , He continued to pray until his belonging passed the x-ray machine. He felt safe and gained his confident, smile and started speaking in tongue again. The officers thought he was crazy and let him go.
He took a big breath and said to himself “thank you God for protecting me and saving me from China’s prison”.
He took a taxi outside the airport and went to a booked hotel. Later at that evening, three men came and took the suitcase from him.
He thought his task was finished and he now could relaxed in the hotel.
The next morning , 3rd June 1989, when he got up he heard another voice saying that he should go to Tiananmen square.
He heard in the news there were an unrest of the uprising students gathering and possible disturbance.
Francis then called the hotel front desk to book a taxi. But when he told them where he want to go, there suddenly were no taxis available.
All the taxi drivers knew and try to avoid that area.
He headed for the streets alone, not even knowing the direction of Tiananmen Square. The idea struck him. Everybody in China love American dollars.
He took a $100 US note from his wallet and with some smooth talking was now on his way with the help of the brave and now $100 US richer taxi driver.
It was about 10am when he finally arrived at Tiananmen Square. The Square was filled with students carrying placards about freedom and marching for democracy.
As he look about he was stunned by sheer enormity of the crowd, over a million people gathered at the Square supporting the students.
In the midst of the crowd was erected a brilliant white statue representing the Goddess of democracy, a symbol of their hope and their protest for fundamental change in their country. (see picture).

A great feeling of compassion welled up inside him as he looked for a way to help them. First he started talking to a few students around him. Then the Holy Spirit moved upon him to share with these people the life and freedom that is in Jesus Christ.
“I once was like all of you, searching for freedom, looking for hope, and finally I found it”,
“How?”, one of the students shouted. “When I found Jesus”, he answered.
More they asked. “Who is Jesus? Where does he live? Would you introduce us to Him ?” This is great he thought. And without realizing what he was doing he started preaching the message of salvation.
As he talked, others joined the small group. He needed to talk louder, as many people listening responded. So without thinking, he jumped onto an overturned metal garbage bin so he could be heard.
On an on, he gave the message of the hope of salvation. He saw many students had tears rolling down their faces and others stood with hands clasped in prayer.
Many students received salvation and freedom from God on that day.
He continue preaching, moving around from one place to another for almost 12 hours. Without bible in his hand, just using simple scriptures that he could remember.
Suddenly and without notice tanks started rolling into the square. Troops receive orders to reclaim Tiananmen Square at all cost. He stopped, looking around him he noticed the time was 10pm. Thousands of soldiers arrived, open fire on people who try to block the army’s advance, as well as on those who are simply shouting at the troops. Tanks and armored personnel carriers move towards the centre of the square and began to force the crowd back, telling them to move on.
Panic broke out as some of the students began to throw rocks at the troops, inciting the mob to riot, small pockets of students tore at the soldiers’ uniform in defiance, while others started to burn the army trucks.
Later he was told by the student leaders that the Communist Government had paid those people to start to riot.
Prior to this the army were reluctant to use force. But now as their tempers were enraged by the sight of their comrades under attack they too gave the command to attack.
Bullets were sprayed from machine guns at the great mass of students and supporters. Francis heard screams of terror as he stood almost frozen to his position above to crowd on his overturned bin.
People were falling all around him, The bullets continued as he watched the people that were standing in front of him being hit and falling to the ground. As he looked behind there were slain bodies all around. In every direction there were injured and dead people as far as he could see.
Around 1am the troops surround Tiananmen Square and wait for further order.
And amidst the horror of the killing he stood there with absolutely no fear.
The nearby apartment building was the next target for the military as they sprayed the deadly bullets, shattering the glass as onlookers fell from their balconies to the pavement below.
Perhaps the most scaring memory he has of that day is a soldier snatching a baby from a mother’s arms, throwing the infant to the ground and killing it.
The mother fell at the soldier feet with her hands wrapped around his ankle and with one swift sweeping movement, the soldier ran his bayonet through her.
He saw another mother, who recognizing her son in the army, ran towards him only to be shot by a soldier on the other side of the square. The son then shot the soldier and the battle broke out between troops and either side of the square.
Soldiers’ bodies, also, now lay among the dead and dying in the Square. Among the casualties, were many that had heard the gospel, perhaps for the first time, that day. Given their lives to Jesus and now lay slaughtered in the Square.
Dr Song praised God for their faith and believe god received them straightaway into heaven.
By 2am Sunday 4th June 1989 the troops had reached the middle of the Square. The student leaders asked to negotiate and agreed to move if given the time. They wanted no more sacrifices.
Instead machine gun fire rang out from every direction.
Totally surrounded and with no where to take over many students hid under the remains of the tents they had erected. Those who were not dead soon were as the tanks rolled over their position in a deliberate act of suppression.
By 4am the shooting stopped and wounded lay around Francis Song and from the other parts of the square people were allowed to crawl to safety or to help.
From the position on the overturned bin, Francis could see the carnage that was the result of what could only be described as one-sided massacre.
As he was one of the easiest targets in the Square it can only described as a miracle that Francis has survived to tell the experience in Tiananmen Square.
Thank you Lord for putting him there so he could share the message of Jesus. Thank you that many of those who died now sit with you in eternal life.
It is our prayer that you will inspired by what Francis’s experience. If you do not know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, our prayer is that you would surrender your life to Him now and begin your eternal journey with Him here on earth today. Allow Him to use your life for His glory and you will be never be the same. Step out with the attitude that dares to believe God, being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you don’t see.
God bless you as we serve the Lord in the many ways he has called us to serve.
Everyone shouts for freedom - freedom of expression, freedom from military occupation, freedom of choice, freedom of religion. When it is a matter of truth and justice, then the shouts for freedom are justified. Many times, however, the freedom people are seeking after, is not freedom at all, like those who shout for freedom of choice, such as the choice to abort an unwanted unborn child, or to use illegal drugs - sometimes what they think is freedom is actually enslavement or taking away the freedom of another and that is not justice.Jesus brought a message of freedom, inner freedom, freedom from the yoke of sin and corruption. At the time Jesus spoke His wonderful words of truth and life, half of the world was enslaved to the Roman Empire and many people who became believers in Jesus were slaves, yet, they still had true inner freedom.
At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus explained what He had come to do, saying: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me...He has sent me... to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed." (Luke 4:18)
Reclaim your liberty in Christ and stand fast! He has made us truly free!
If you continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (Jn. 8:32) If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (Jn. 8:36) I am the way, the truth, and the life. (Jn. 14:6)
Knowing the Truth -- the Truth that sets us free -- is supposed to be a fundamental aspect of the Christian experience. And of course, knowing the Truth means knowing Jesus Christ -- for He IS the Truth. Yet so many of God's people do not know the Truth. They are blind to it and deceived.
If you are ready to receive freedom, turn from your sins and believe in Jesus Christ so that you can receive freedom forgiveness from sin and the hope for eternal life, then take a moment to bow your head and pray the following prayer out loud:
If you prayed this prayer of salvation, congratulations, you have made the right decision. God has received you and forgiven you if you really meant it. You receive a real freedom.
Know now that:
"Those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun.
